Fiber Optic Sensing Association Commends API’s New Leak Detection Standard

WASHINGTON DC – April 28, 2022 – The Fiber Optic Sensing Association (FOSA) congratulated the American Petroleum’s (API) release of the 2022 revisions of API RP 1175 – “Pipeline Leak Detection-Program Management” and API RP 1130 “Computational Pipeline Monitoring for Liquids.”

“Fiber Optic Sensing based pipeline leak detection and location software is possibly the most important technological development in pipeline leak detection in recent years. The inclusion of Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing in the latest revisions of the API RPs is a testimony to the technology’s contribution to leak detection,” said FOSA Executive Director Mark Uncapher.

Commenting on the just-released revisions to 1130 and 1175, FOSA Chairman Dave Cunningham said, “FOSA is gratified sensing technology has become more fully recognized as an important tool against pipeline leaks. Developed under API’s American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited process, API standards are appropriately recognized not only for their technical rigor but also their third-party accreditation which facilitates acceptance by state, federal, and increasingly international regulators.”
