Sensing in the city

researchers at NEC have shown it is possible to monitor traffic using “lit” fiber after separating out sensor and telecom data. Giovanni Milione of NEC Laboratories America in Princeton, NJ, and colleagues used such fiber in Dallas and New Jersey to record the speed of cars as accurately as can be done with cameras. Milione, also chair of the Fiber Optic Sensing Association’s Smart City Committee, foresees DAS becoming an integral part of “smart cities,” being used not only for keeping tabs on traffic but also monitoring the health, and even the coverage and saving on wiring and power will make it indispensable in the future.
